In a field often associated with long recovery periods and intimidating procedures, Dr. Kow represents a new generation of orthopaedic surgeons. Young, highly trained, and deeply committed to reshaping how Malaysians view bone and joint care.

For him, orthopaedics was not sparked by one dramatic life event. Instead, it grew from something simpler yet powerful: the desire to help people, and the satisfaction of seeing them walk again after surgery. "I like orthopaedics because it's one of the few fields where you can do something and see the results almost immediately," he shares. "When I see a patient walk after a procedure, that sense of responsibility and satisfaction is priceless."

Today, he serves in Malaysia’s government healthcare system, managing a wide range of cases, from hip and knee pain to diabetic-related infections that may require amputation. Soon, he will bring that extensive expertise, along with advanced training that few young surgeons pursue, to ALTY Orthopaedic Hospital.

Fellowship Training in Arthroplasty and Adult Reconstruction

What many may not know is that before returning home, Dr. Kow underwent advanced clinical training at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Singapore General Hospital (SGH), making meaningful personal sacrifices, including spending extended periods away from his family, in pursuit of surgical excellence. He chose this path not out of obligation, but out of a desire to bring world-class orthopaedic care to his patients.

This dedication reflects one of his strongest traits: commitment. Whether in government institutions or private practice, he approaches every patient with both technical precision and genuine empathy.

Understanding Patients Beyond Their Pain

To Dr. Kow, treating a patient isn’t just about diagnosing a hip or knee issue. It’s about understanding the person behind it. Their lifestyle, expectations, family realities, and even financial concerns.

“Some patients have multiple layers of problems,” he explains. “Once you understand what they’re going through, you can offer the best treatment. Surgical or non-surgical, based on what they truly need.”

He tailors recommendations to each individual. Someone who wants to travel the world again requires a very different approach compared to someone content with a slower, home-based lifestyle. His goal is to shift patients from fear and avoidance to confidence and mobility.

He added, “I am committed to help patients see that recovery is possible not by staying home with medication, but by regaining the life they want.”

Changing the Malaysian Mindset About Surgery

One of the misconceptions he deals with often is the fear of surgery among Malaysians. Compared to Singaporeans, he notices Malaysians are generally more hesitant, often due to stories passed around socially.

“There’s a negative environment when people hear the word ‘surgery’,” he says. “We need to help patients see that surgery is not the last resort. It’s part of the recovery process, just like taking a Panadol when you’re sick.”

His mission? To change the landscape “one knee at a time,” through better information, better technology, and better patient experiences that ultimately spread through the community.

Advanced Techniques That Set Him Apart

Dr. Kow is also part of a movement introducing newer surgical approaches to Malaysia, including robotic-assisted knee arthroplasty and the kinematic alignment technique. After learning directly from Prof. Lincoln at Singapore General Hospital, he adopted a philosophy that emphasizes restoring the knee to its natural, individualized alignment rather than relying solely on traditional mechanical alignment. This kinematic approach often leads to faster recovery and better functional performance for patients.

“It’s widely practiced in leading centres in the West,” he explains. “I believe that adopting these methods enables us to deliver less invasive procedures, shorter operative times, and superior outcomes for our patients.” In fact, most of his patients are able to walk within hours of undergoing knee replacement surgery.

Clear Explanations Through Visuals

To help patients understand complex conditions, he uses a visual folder filled with X-rays, diagrams, and surgical steps. “Instead of explaining everything verbally, I show them,” he says. “When they can see it, they understand.”

A Message He Wants the Public to Know

If he could speak directly to the public in one video, it would be about the misconception surrounding “miracle therapies” such as repeated PRP or stem cell injections. These treatments are not for everyone, and repeating them unnecessarily doesn’t make them work better.

Only selected patients truly benefit and expectations must be realistic.
